You are Green, a spacecraft engineer, a job that allows you to spend years bouncing between different satellites and planets on the ships you’ve served. Your comfortable life was shattered one month ago when you received a devastating call from your twin sibling: they’ve been plagued with amnesiac episodes. Although a conclusive diagnosis was impossible, they were convinced they were infected with WRM-19 (“the worm”). Grief-stricken by the news, you recalled that human testing for a potential WRM-19 cure, named BLU-01, is planned on the planet Satellite 34 (Sat 34). It might be the only way they can have access to the extremely limited cure. You convinced your sibling to sign up for testing and go to meet them on Sat 34.

A few days later, you wished your twin ‘good luck’ as they entered the research facility. You didn’t have to wait for long. You soon received communication from Dr. Blue, the famed researcher leading cure development efforts on Sat 34, announcing the death of a portion of human testers - your dear sibling among them. Despite your loss, you held no ill-will against Dr. Blue. The doctor directly messaged you to explain that the testers revealed this fatal flaw in the cure. Your twin’s death was not in vain – they have sacrificed their life for the sake of science.

Two weeks ago

You learned of disturbing news. Earth’s authorities approved distribution of the cure in its current state. How could this be? Are they really that desperate? You must do something to stop this, otherwise your twin’s death will be in vain.

Under the cover of night, you broke into an office to dig into the BLU-01 files, discovering that in two weeks, the first batch of this deadly substance will be delivered to Earth by the SS Karma, whose owner is the private pilot Captain Black. Aside from the Captain, you learned that Dr. Blue, Captain Black’s security personnel named Red, and the assigned engineer will make up the crew for this trip. You need to get rid of the unfinished cure before it reaches Earth, but it will certainly be locked up. How will you get to it?

Yesterday

You read Dr. Blue’s recently published report that summarized the results of the latest trials. Dr. Blue was, like you, vehemently against the distribution of a deadly cure. You took a chance and contacted Dr. Blue, and as you had hoped, they agreed to your plan. The doctor will provide you with the access code to the BLU-01 container on the flight, but emphasized that they would need to keep the arrangement quiet, even if you are caught. You fully understand that they must protect their legal reputation to continue cure development efforts. You, however, have nothing to fear.

4:00

Though you are a spacecraft engineer, you aren’t assigned to the SS Karma. You look for the assigned engineer so you can knock them out and take their ID, but you can’t find them anywhere.

4:30

You finally find the engineer knocked out in a storage closet on Satellite 34. What happened? No time to wonder. You text Dr. Blue that you will be late for 5:00 boarding.

5:15

You arrive at the SS Karma but Dr. Blue didn’t wait for you. Everyone is inside and you can’t get in. You text Dr. Blue and they let you in, telling you in a panic that the real engineer is also here. No, that’s impossible! You saw the engineer knocked out less than an hour ago. You hide in the engine room for take-off and think about what to do.

5:30

The force of take-off without being strapped in makes you hit your head. It starts to bleed.

6:00

You go to the canteen and confront the imposter. You tell everyone you are the real engineer and Yellow is an imposter. Captain tells Red to handle it after dinner. Red doesn’t eat, but only drinks a strange liquid.

6:30

Captain Black and Dr. Blue leave the canteen first. Red takes you and Yellow to the security room where they lock you both up. You don’t know how you’re going to escape.

6:55

One moment you’re in the security room cell, and the next you’re in the cockpit. You have no idea how you got here, nor any way to explain the 25 minute gap in your memory. You try not thinking about what it could mean. Luckily, the cockpit is where you want to be, since that’s where Dr Blue should have left the BLU-01 cabinet access code and a copy of the research lab access keycard, which emits a purple light (Dr. Blue also has one, the original). You find these under their seat, as per the plan. You put the keycard underneath your suit so no one can see it.

7:05

You hear the loud and angry voices of Dr. Blue and Captain Black growing closer. They must be heading to the cockpit. You hide in the adjacent comms room. They are now close enough that you can hear the Captain say, “You think you can stop me now, Dr. Blue? Over my dead body!” They enter the cockpit and you go to the research lab to do your job: dump the shipment of the unfinished cure.

7:20

In the research lab, you open the BLU-01 cabinet with the access code. One of the three hyposprays is already missing. You throw the vat of BLU-01 out the airlock and keep the other two hyposprays; one you hold onto, and the other you put inside Dr. Blue’s desk just in case. On the desk, you notice some of Dr. Blue’s personal notes, and reading their journal you are horrified to find that Dr. Blue approved human testing without completing the proper checks beforehand. Your sibling’s death IS their fault! You text Dr Blue with an angry accusation.

8:31

The lights go out without warning. Something’s wrong - you can fix it. You keep the hypospray with you when you leave the research lab. Before you turn the corner in the hallway, you bump into someone in the dark. You hit your head again and black out.

8:38

You wake up in the dark, still in the hallway. You make your way to the engine room to fix the lights.

8:44

In the engine room, you restore the lights. Right away, an emergency meeting is called and when you arrive in the canteen, Red tells everyone that Captain Black has died. You are shocked. You know that Captain Black was with Dr. Blue the entire time - you completely misjudged Dr. Blue! You need to expose them for their role in your sibling’s death, and likely the Captain’s death too!

9:05

The SS Karma’s emergency landing software brings it to the nearest astral object with a landing pad. As you exit the ship, it hits you: where’s the hypospray that was in your hand? It’s gone!

What you have & know

  • You don’t have an ID card on you. Of course, you left the one you own at home as it doesn’t match who you’re currently impersonating. You couldn’t find the ID card on the real engineer on Sat 34.
  • Underneath your suit, you have a copy of the research lab access keycard, which emits a purple light.
  • You bumped the back of your head twice. You feel trickles of blood down your neck.

Your objectives & secrets

  • Find out who killed Captain Black.
  • Don’t attract suspicion that you would kill Captain Black or Dr. Blue. You can’t go to prison - you must force Dr. Blue to account for their decision.
  • Find out the events of the ship: Why Yellow impersonated as an engineer, how you left the security room, why the ship’s power shut down, what happened to the hypospray you took from the research lab, and who you bumped into in the dark.

WRM-19 disease profile

Origin: Alien parasite, 1st known case in 2119

Effects: While dormant, causes short-term amnesia in the host with no conclusive pattern. Upon becoming active, the parasite consumes the host’s brain. Death occurs <5 minutes of onset. Onset is unpredictable.

Spread: Infectious. Transmission methods and patterns are unknown.

Treatment: No cure in market.

Diagnosis: Prior to death, diagnosis is not possible. Posthumous diagnosis is possible. Self-diagnosis is prevalent by attributing symptoms of short-term amnesia to WRM-19, but this is highly unreliable.

Captain Black autopsy report

Time of death: 8:39pm.

Time of discovery: 8:44pm.

Cause of death: Theorium poisoning, injected into the neck via hypospray (no-contact needle). Unable to confirm which hypospray was used.

Notes: No signs of WRM-19 detected.
