THE STORY

As the blood moon rises into the darkening sky, you and six others arrive at the heart of Moonshadow Forest and discover the underground shrine hidden beneath Moonshadow Lake. When the only way out vanishes, you have no choice but to stay the night and find an escape in the morning.

But one of you will never see daylight again.

The killer must be unmasked by dawn lest you all perish here. With guidance from the gods and only each other to rely on, you must confront not only the darkness around you, but the tangled truths that bind your fates together.

THE GAME

  • 4 - 5 hours. The game master adds or reduces time based on the players’ progress.

  • 6 players. The game master plays a specific character. All playable characters are by default gender-neutral. Players choose their character’s gender and names (optional).

  • Intermediate, but can be played by new jubensha players. The game master guide provides suggestions on how the game master can aid beginner players.

  • Content Warnings: References to fantasy suicide, child abuse, and genre-typical violence. Ages 16+ recommended.

    Priest

    Compassionate, selfless, and loyal. As the High Priest of Mariel's Worship, they are blessed by the god of love with healing and purification abilities.

    Elf

    Intelligent, proud, and sophisticated. A distinguished professor of magical studies and is known for publishing many books on the subject.

    Dryad

    Majestic, wise, and long-lived. An ancient and revered tree spirit known as the Great Eldertree, and chief of the Moonshadow Forest dryad tribe.

    Prophet

    Steadfast, principled, and devout. This masked figure is the chosen of Lady Aureth, the goddess of time, and the voice through which the gods make their will known.

    Scholar

    Knowledgeable, observant, and inquisitive. Tasked by the Great Eldertree to investigate the library buried under Moonshadow Lake.

    Orc

    Aloof, dominant, and ruthless. Their father is the chief of the most powerful orc stronghold in the continent, situated next to Moonshadow Forest.

Meet the creator

Ophelia Au

After playing and hosting dozens of translated games, I wanted to bring together my favourite jubensha design features into a story infused with fantasy elements familiar to Western audiences. In fact, it’s inspired by one of my favourite games: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim!

My primary goal was to immerse players into a unique fantasy world using fleshed out characters with desires, fears, hopes, and flaws of their own. Traditionally gendered characters and problematic elements are common in Chinese jubensha. I wanted to move away from this. All playable characters in this game are gender-neutral, and potentially triggering content is clearly warned for and not gratuitous.

I was equally interested in creating a satisfying puzzle. There are twists and turns sprinkled into every clue and every interaction that make four or five hours go by in a flash. At the end, everything will make sense - but you’ll need to put your brains together to connect all the dots.

Meaningful character journeys with multiple endings, layers upon layers of a fantasy murder mystery, several months of testing and iteration, and professional editing and illustrations combine to make a final product I am proud to share with everyone. I hope you’ll pick up a copy of the Blood Moon Pact and enjoy it as much as I did creating it!
